FORMER MEMPHIS MITCHELL STAR LEBANON -- It didn’t take long for Brandon Powell to make an impression on Cumberland basketball fans. A former standout at Memphis Mitchell and a semester transfer from Marshall, Powell poured in six 3-pointers and connected on 8-of-14 field goals Monday night as CU routed Lyon College 72-47 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. The Bulldogs (13-2, 4-1 TSAC) used a 16-4 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to break open a close game and take control. Channing Tucker had a pair of baskets during the stretch, including a 3-pointer, while Powell and Finley both added 3-pointers. CU forced 23 turnovers from Lyon, turning those into 19 points. Brandon Springer added 20 points and Jamar Finley netted 14 for the Bulldogs, who finished 10-of-28 from 3-point range. Powell, who became eligible Monday when second semester classes began, signed out of Memphis Mitchell with Florida and played in 23 games for the 2007 national championship Gators. He sat out the 2007-2008 season at Marshall as a transfer, and averaged 23 minutes per contest in 2008 before leaving. In high school, he averaged 20.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game during senior season. He was an All-State selection and was voted Player of the Year for the city of Memphis in both his junior and senior seasons. "You can tell Brandon played at a higher level because of his passing ability," said CU coach Lonnie Thompson, "he knows how to make a pass so you can do something with it." Cumberland hosts Lambuth Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Floyd Center. |
