GIRLS' TEAMS RANKED NO. 5 IN AAA
GLADEVILLE -- There’s nothing like a red-hot basketball rivalry to knock the chill off a January evening. Friday night’s District 9AAA showdown at Wilson Central between the defending Class AAA state champion Lady Wildcats and their arch rivals from Mt. Juliet could be a sellout.
Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Fans are urged to arrive early to avoid long lines at the door.
The two teams find themselves tied at No. 5 in the latest statewide Class AAA poll and both are coming off impressive wins.
Tuesday night Wilson Central improved to 14-3 overall / 3-0 in District 9AAA Tuesday with a 60-42 win at Hendersonville High. Senior guard Jessyca Christopher knocked down four 3-pointers as she and Iesha Hassell each finished with 12 points for the winners.
Kelsey McGee also reached double figures with 10. Reigning Class AAA Miss Basketball Jasmine Hassell battled through a stomach virus and added eight points.
On Monday, Mt. Juliet’s Lady Bears rolled to an easy 71-30 road win over Antioch.
Mt. Juliet improved to 16-1 overall as ninth grader Caya Williams poured in 26 points for Mt. Juliet. Britt Bell finished with 14 and Sarah Beth Roberts had 10 points.
Like Wilson Central, Mt. Juliet stands undefeated (4-0) in District 9AAA play after a thrilling 52-49 victory over a veteran Smyrna club Friday, Jan. 9.
Perhaps as many as three ninth graders are expected to see extensive action for Mt. Juliet -- including high-scoring post Caya Williams.
Other prep action Friday includes the following match-ups:
Westmoreland at Friendship Christian School and Gordonsville visiting Watertown in District 8A action.
Lebanon travels to Murfreesboro to play Siegel High in a District 7AAA twinbill.
On Saturday, Friendship will entertain Eagleville High while Mt. Juliet Christian Academy will travel to Warren County to take on Boyd Christian.
