FCS sweeps 8A finals PDF Print E-mail

WATERTOWN -- Friendship Christian made it a clean sweep of the District 8A basketball finals Tuesday night at Watertown High with both the girls and boys teams claiming tournament championships.

The Lady Commanders (20-9) held off a determined Gordonsville squad for a 69-66 overtime victory in Tuesday night's opener.

Friendship held a 16-point lead at intermission, only to see the Tigerettes battle back to tie the game at 60-all at the end of regulation.

District 8A MVP Katy Vaughan led FCS with 22 points. Carly Warmath added 20, Laurel Burroughs had 13 and Andi Morrisett finished with 12. Gordonsville (21-6) was led by Taryn Smith with 19 points.

Both squads will host first round Region 4A games Friday at 7 p.m.

Boy’s action Tuesday night found the FCS Commanders defeating Trousdale County High 64-57 for the tournament championship.

FCS (25-3) built a comfortable 32-20 lead at intermission. Four Commanders reached double figures led by Lee Maasen with 21, Parker Teeter and Nathan Boyd with 15 each and 10 points from Hardie Sorrels. Alex Gregory had 19 for the Yellow Jackets.

Both teams will host first round Region 4A games Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
