CU HOSTS TREVECCA SATURDAY
McKENZIE -- Cumberland put together a 20-9 run over four minutes to take a one-point lead in the second half but was outscored, 16-6, over the final six minutes, as the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 77-68 decision to Bethel College Thursday evening in McKenzie.
Cumberland (8-21, 4-11 TSAC) trailed by as many as 14 points early in the second half and was behind, 56-44, with 10:48 remaining after a Nina Djokovic for the Wildcats.
But the Lady Bulldogs mounted a comeback over the next four minutes, stringing together a 20-9 stretch that gave them a 62-61 advantage with just over six minutes to play in the contest.
Simone Ryan, who scored a team-high 22 points, netted seven during the run, while Chaquaila Gaten also had seven points, including a bucket with 6:50 to play that pushed CU ahead for the first time in the game since a 12-11 lead with 13:46 left in the first half.
Cumberland missed its next five field goal attempts, committed a pair of turnovers and missed the front end of a 1-plus-1 three straight times, first by Brittany Cash and then twice in a row by Ryan. Gaten finally ended the CU drought with a field goal at 2:46, but by then the Wildcats (18-11, 9-7) held a 71-62 advantage.
Gaten finished with 16 points and Tamara Gonzalez added 13 points for the Bulldogs. Ryan grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Cumberland hosts rival Trevecca Saturday in its final regular season game at 2 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
