HENDERSON -- No. 5-ranked Freed-Hardeman eliminated Cumberland 68-54 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the TranSouth Women’s basketball tournament.
The Lady Lions went on a 15-2 second half run to break open a close game.
Cumberland (8-23) closed within 43-37 with 11:42 remaining in the contest after an Angie Wells bucket, but the Bulldogs failed to score a field goal for the next six minutes.
Freed-Hardeman took full advantage, running off a 15-2 spurt that essentially put the game away.
CU committed four turnovers and missed seven field goals during the stretch, with two free throws from Simone Ryan the only points.
In her final game as a Bulldog and playing with a fractured left (non-shooting) hand, senior Chaquaila Gaten scored 12 points, as did Tamara Gonzalez, while Ryan grabbed 10 rebounds.
Cumberland trailed 31-20 at halftime after hitting just 27 percent from the field and committing 12 turnovers.
A basket from Bona Ogada and 3-pointers by Gaten and Gonzalez helped the Bulldogs close within six, but the costly dryspell doomed CU in the end.
Whitney Johnson netted a game-high 19 points for FHU and also recorded eight rebounds, while Meribeth Boehler had 16 points and Jana Cross posted 12.
The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the game with a pair of 3-pointers from Gaten, but the Lady Lions answered with 15 consecutive points over the next six minutes.
Johnson netted five points and Cross and Boehler each posted four.
Wells ended the run at 12:47 for the Bulldogs, but FHU extended the lead to 21-8 over the next three minutes.
The Lady Lions led by as many as 18 in the period, but CU closed the half with a 9-2 spurt over the final four minutes, with Gonzalez, Gaten, Wells, Ryan and Keshia Brown all contributing.
