INJURY PREVENTION FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

Coaches from Wilson County’s many recreation leagues as well as their junior high and high school counterparts are invited to attend an Adolescent Athlete Healthcare Education Clinic hosted next month by University Medical Center.

Set for Cumberland University’s Labry Hall, Saturday, July 11
between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the seminar will focus on injury education / preventative measures for boys and girls ages 10-17.

The topics to be covered include:

"Shoulder Injuries in Adolescent Athletes" and "Elbow Injuries in Adolescent Athletes" by Damon Petty, M.D. - Petty Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, "Knee Injuries in Adolescent Athletes" by Jonathan Cornelius, M.D. - Tennessee Orthopedics, and "Growth Plate Injuries in Athletes" by David Luck, M.D.

"We’re seeing a marked increase in shoulder and elbow injuries," said Nathan Johnson, Certified Athletic Trainer with UMC.

"So many of these could be prevented if we can get the word out about proper conditioning and stretching among these young boys and girls."

Doctors Petty, Cornelius and Luck have graciously donated their time in order to make the July program possible.

UMC’s event is presented free of charge to coaches of all levels. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. WILSON COUNTY SCHOOLS HAVE OKAYED THIS EVENT FOR IN-SERVICE CREDIT. Advanced registration is encouraged.

For more information, please contact Nathan Johnson, Certified Athletic Trainer, UMC Sports Medicine Department, at 615-598-3877.
