CU'S HIGH-SCORING SENIOR

LEBANON - Following a stellar senior season, Cumberland University's Brandon Springer was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Year the league announced Wednesday.

Springer, who edged out Union University's Greg Truvillion for the honors, was the only CU player named to the All-Conference first team, and Walter Simon made the league's All-Freshman Team.

The 6-foot-5 Springer leads the conference in scoring, posting 22.3 points per game on the year, including 22.4 in Cumberland's 16 conference games. Truvillion is next in the league with 18.7 points per outing.

Springer, who earned conference Player of the Week honors four times this year and was named the NAIA Player of the Week once, led the nation in scoring for several weeks of the season, getting his average to more than 24 per game at one point.

The Hunters Lane High School product is also in the top five of three other major statistical categories in the TranSouth as well, including rebounds (second, 9.63 per game), steals (second, 2.3) and field goal percentage (fifth, 56.2 percent). He recorded 15 double-doubles on the year, including seven straight to open conference play.

Simon, a 6-9 forward from Dresden, Germany, was CU's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.6 points per game and starting all but one game. Simon averaged nearly a block a game to lead the team and was fourth in the league, while his rebounding average of 6.3 per contest is eighth in the conference.

The Bulldogs (11-16) travel to Trevecca Nazarene Thursday for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal matchup in the TranSouth Championships.
