|Greener, Schaefer honored again|

LEBANON -- Cumberland seniors Matt Greener and Shawn Schaefer were named the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, Monday for the second straight week, as announced by the conference office. The award is Schaefer’s fourth of the season and Greener’s third, and the Bulldogs have now won eight of the league’s 12 POW honors so far this year.
Greener batted .571 (12-for-21) in five games during the week with three home runs, three doubles and 11 RBIs. He also scored six times and extended his hitting streak to 19 games in the process. He was 5-for-11 (.455) with four extra base hits, two RBIs and four runs scored (also slugged 1.091) at Union University, as the Bulldogs won 2-of-3 to start TranSouth Conference action.
For the season he is batting .482 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs, 47 RBIs and 33 runs scored in 31 contests. He ranks in the Top 15 nationally in average, doubles, hits (53) and home runs.
Schaefer won his sixth straight start, scattering seven hits and striking out 11 in a 2-0 nine-inning victory at Union on Friday. The lefthander allowed more than one baserunner in just one inning, the fifth, while tossing his fifth straight complete game. He lowered his ERA to 0.84, which ranks fifth nationally, and has allowed just 24 hits in 42.2 innings of work this season with 43 strikeouts.
Cumberland is 25-6 on the season and 2-1 in the TranSouth heading into Wednesday’s nonconference home game against Lambuth University at 2 p.m. at Ernest L. Stockton Field.
The Bulldogs host Bethel University this weekend in a conference series starting Friday with a single game at 2 p.m.
