LEBANON -- Cumberland’s Devin Stovall was named the TranSouth Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing a two-hit shutout against Blue Mountain College on Saturday and posting a save in another appearance last week.

The Scottsville, Ky., native allowed just three baserunners in his first-ever start against a TranSouth Conference opponent. The Toppers had a walk in the second, a single in the fourth and a double in the seventh, with just one runner reaching third base. The righthander struck out seven and threw just 85 pitches in the seven-inning victory.

Stovall has become one of Cumberland’s most relied upon relievers and has served as a spot starter as well this season. The sophomore has suffered some tough luck in the wins and losses column, but he has five saves and a 2.23 ERA for the year.

With Saturday’s win he is now 2-3 with a 3.10 ERA in five starts this season. He allowed two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings against Milligan College, two earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings at fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle, one earned run on four hits with a career-best 11 strikeouts in six innings versus Missouri Baptist, and five earned runs with seven strikeouts in a career-long 6.2 innings against top-ranked Lee University. Five of the six runs allowed against Lee came on a pair of home runs.

Stovall has enjoyed even greater success as a reliever, posting an 0-1 mark with a 0.59 ERA and five saves in nine appearances, giving up just 10 hits with nine walks and 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work.

Opponents are batting just .172 against him as a reliever, including three shutout innings with four strikeouts at Union University. Stovall had a three-inning save at Brewton-Parker and one-inning saves against Mid-Continent, Tennessee Wesleyan and Indiana-Southeast. For the season he is 2-4 overall in 44.1 innings of work with 20 walks and 52 strikeouts.

Cumberland plays at Campbellsville University at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday and travels to Nashville for a three-game series against rival Trevecca Nazarene starting Friday.
