JACKSON - Chrissy Worth allowed one run on five hits and Samantha Queen went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in Martin Methodist’s 6-0 victory over Cumberland in an elimination game here Thursday night at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex. With the loss the season ends for Cumberland (27-22-1) and seniors Caity Gray and Tonya Barlow, but the Bulldogs return 14 letterwinners for next season, including both pitchers. The RedHawks (38-21) scored once in the first and three more times in the fourth thanks to two CU errors. Queen had an RBI double in that inning and added a two-run homer in the fifth for MMC. Worth (14-8) had a four-hit shutout into the seventh before Emily Nicholson’s solo homer to center. The lefthander walked one and struck out four in her second victory of the day, as Martin Methodist eliminated Bethel University, 9-1. Courtney Maynard (18-10) suffered the loss for CU, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Allison Blackwood tossed the final 2.2 frames for the Bulldogs. The RedHawks took an early lead with a run in the first after Katlin White beat out a bunt to start the inning and Worth reached on an infield single. White stole third and scored on Veronika Fukunishi’s sacrifice fly to center. MMC broke the game open with three runs in the fourth, thanks to a pair of errors by the Bulldogs. Chae Ellis led off with a single off the glove of Maynard and Megan McKean grounded to third with one out, but Caity Gray and Sarah Murray were unable to complete the throw-and-catch for the force out at second. Samantha Queen then doubled to rightcenter, scoring one run, and another came across when Murray’s throw to the plate sailed high off the screen behind the plate. Chrissy Darnell followed with another double to rightcenter, giving Martin Methodist a 4-0 edge and ending the day for Maynard. Ellis walked to leadoff the fifth and Queen hit a two-run homer down the rightfield line with two outs for a 6-0 MMC lead. |
