MT. JULIET -- Senior Josh Smith kept Station Camp off-balance for most of the night as Mt. Juliet defeated Station Camp 4-1 Wednesday for a seventh consecutive District 9AAA baseball championship. A lefty, Smith improved to 8-0 on the season by twirling six and one-thirds innings of six hit ball with five strikeouts before giving way to closer Conner Sugg in the seventh. Sugg recorded the final two outs of the game and earned his 15th save of the season -- believed to be a state record. The Bears (35-4) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third as Robby Amity reached on the first of his two doubles and eventually scored on a Cody Carr ground ball out. Mt. Juliet tacked on a pair in the fourth, as Mason Barber's two-run double plated Forrest Goodwin and Caleb Chowbay. Catcher Zach Tompkins' double drove in Hunter Gilbert with Mt. Juliet's final run in the fifth. Mt. Juliet will host the Region 5AAA opener Monday, May 14 at 7 p.m. against the District 10AAA runner-up. The Golden Bears reached the finals with a 9-4 victory over Wilson Central in Tuesday night's South Division championship game. On Monday, Mt. Juliet led 2-0 in the first, but rains forced the gme to be suspended. Once resumed Tuesday afternoon, the Bears quickly built a 5-0 lead. Caleb Chowbay (5-0) started Tuesday and came back to the hill on Tuesday -- working six and one-thirds innings -- striking out 10. Eric Guethlein finished 2-for-4 for WCHS with two RBI. Wilson Central finished the season 15-19 overall. Station Camp defeated Gallatin 2-0 Tuesday to win the North Division championship as Lee Haeberle went the distance and allowed just one hit. |
