Bears lose two straight
MURFREESBORO -- A couple of roller-coaster losses ended Mt. Juliet's Class AAA baseball run in the BlueCross Spring Fling earlier this week.

The Golden Bears opened tournament play Tuesday night with a 14-10 loss to Farragut High at Siegel. Mt. Juliet led 5-0 before the Admirals mounted a comeback and turned the contest into a slugfest thanks to an eight-run outburst in the fourth.

Surprising Riverdale High eliminated Mt. Juliet 4-3 Wednesday morning. The win marked the first for the Warriors in five trips to the state tournament.

Riverdale led 4-0, but Cody Carr singled and scored on Zach Tompkins’ single to make it 4-1 after five innings. Mt. Juliet then scored two more in the bottom of the seventh as Tomkins grounded out to score Carr, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Kyle Smith singled in Hunter Gilbert, who had reached on an error -- but the Bears couldn’t force extra innings.

Knox Grace 11, Friendship 3
MURFREESBORO -- Friendship Christian’s dreams of a fourth state championship in a single school year were dashed Wednesday as Knox Grace ousted the Commanders (37-4) from the Class A state baseball tournament 11-3 at Riverdale.

Xander Helton and Bryson Slagle combined for five hits and seven RBIs for Grace. Slagle added a three-run homer. The Rams broke open a 1-1 contest with four runs in the fourth before scoring six more times in the sixth inning.
