Cumberland University lefthanded pitcher Chipper Smith was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 38th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, June 6. The Valencia, Calif., native was the 1,157th player taken in the 40-round selection process. Smith posted a 6-6 mark with a 3.65 earned-run-average in 13 appearances, all starts, with five complete games and three shutouts. He worked 79.0 innings, allowing 67 hits with 32 walks and a team-best 89 strikeouts while opponents batted .234. Smith tossed a seven inning no-hitter in February versus Point Park University, a team that finished the year 53-11 overall and ranked sixth nationally while making the NAIA World Series. He struck out 14 batters in that contest with one walk in a 5-0 triumph. Smith is the 36th Cumberland player selected in the MLB Draft under longtime head coach Woody Hunt and the 83rd player to sign a Major League contract during Hunt’s tenure. |
