LEBANON -- Talk about a party-pooper. Down 14-13, 19th-ranked University of the Cumberlands scored 48 straight points and spanked No. 22 Cumberland 55-13 Saturday at Nokes-Lasater Field, spoiling the debut of the Bulldogs’ new facility. The Patriots (2-0) racked up 544 yards of total offense, including 428 on the ground on 52 attempts and five touchdowns, defeating the Bulldogs for the eighth consecutive time in front of a crowd of over 3,000. Lemeco Miller was the workhorse for the Bulldogs (1-1) for the second straight game, carrying 25 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including 22 rushes for 112 yards and two scores in the first half. But a 38-yard touchdown pass to Willie Gibson, followed by a blocked punt that Gibson ran back for a touchdown and then an interception by the Bulldogs, their second of the first half, turned the tide in favor of the visitors. Reed Gurchiek finished just 2-of-11 passing for 40 yards and the two picks for CU. Patriots quarterback Jay Bright was 8-of-16 for 116 yards and one score. Cumberland begins division action next Saturday, hosting Belhaven University at 1:30 p.m. |
