LEBANON -- Lefty Anthony Gomez tossed a three-hit shutout in Saturday's opener but the favor was returned in the second game by Georgetown College’s Shaun Meyer’s, who allowed just two hits in seven innings, as Cumberland split a doubleheader against the 20th-ranked Tigers, winning 1-0 before dropping a 6-0 decision at Stockton Field.

Gomez (3-0) continued his torrid pace to the season, allowing just three hits (two in the ninth inning) with two walks and six strikeouts and throwing just 104 pitches. The lefthander faced only four batters over the minimum (one was erased on a doubleplay) and he retired 17 of 19 batters faced before running into trouble in the ninth.

The contest ended dramatically after T.C. O’Neal led off the ninth inning with an infield single up the middle. With two outs O’Neal took off for second and Martin Lemus grounded through the hole vacated by the second baseman. The ball was not sharply hit and O’Neal just kept running all the way to the plate, but Richie Seaton’s throw nailed the runner for the final out of the game, preserving the 1-0 victory.

Cumberland (8-4-1, 2-1 Mid-South) managed just six hits against Georgetown’s Matt Smith (0-3). The righthander walked one, struck out two and worked in-and-out of trouble in the middle innings when the Bulldogs had seven combined baserunners in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Tyler Alford drove in the only run of the game with a one-out single up the middle in the fifth, plating pinch-runner Ryan Critchelow. Robert Gonzalez followed Alford with a double, but Cory Urquhart bounced into an inning-ending doubleplay to quash the threat.

CU’s Daniel Harrison was thrown out at the plate to end the fourth inning by righthander Jordan Hinshaw and the Bulldogs had two runners in the seventh only to groundout twice.

Lemus walked against Gomez in the second, but Hinshaw bounced into a doubleplay. Catcher Marvin Flores was hit in the third inning and pinch-runner O’Neal stole second and third, but Tanner Baldwin and Justin Moore struck out to end the inning.

Ryan Serrato drew a two-out walk in the fifth but was stranded at first and Hinshaw doubled with two outs in the seventh before a foul out by David Higuera.

Georgetown (8-8, 1-2) started fast in the second game with three runs against CU starter Evin Einhardt and Meyer did the rest in the seven-inning affair. Hinshaw plated two runs with a single down the rightfield line and Higuera drove in another run with a single through the rightside.

Meyer (2-1) set down 13 of 14 batters after a leadoff single by Gonzalez in the first inning. He hit Josciel Veras and walked Tyler Anderson in the fifth, but Alford struck out to end the inning. Craig Monson singled to start the seventh, Cumberland’s first hit since the leadoff single by Gonzalez, but Monson was erased by a doubleplay, just as Gonzalez was in the first inning.

Einhardt (0-1) gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings. The righthander walked two and struck out three. Tyler Adams tossed the final four innings for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on four hits.

"We got a really good effort from Gomez in the first game," said CU coach Woody Hunt, "he battled every inning. We just didn't hit hit, it looked like we couldn't handle prosperity. We looked like we invented the game Friday (22 hits) and just didn't play today (Saturday). We were lucky to get two out of three -- we were one play from losing two games today.

"We've got to grow up a little and show some more toughness on the offensive end of the game. I call it 'reading the headlines'. In this game you've got to forget about yesterday and concentrate on the task at hand. I am just disgusted about the lack of maturity in that second game."

Cumberland plays at Bryan College in Dayton on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before returning to conference play next weekend at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY.
