Voter turnout in Wilson County was close to the same as it was four years ago in the Presidential race, said Administrator of Elections Phillip Warren after all 35 precincts reported in Tuesday night.

He noted that 51,715 of the county’s over 76,000 registered voters cast their ballots in Tuesday’s general election, making for a turnout percentage of 68.20 percent.

“It is almost exactly the number it was in 2008,” Warren said, comparing it to the 51,159 that voted in the same election four years ago.

This year, 31,896 of those were individuals who participated in early voting. “About 62 percent voted early and I think that is wonderful,” Warren said. It also made the Election Commission run smoothly on election night.

“We had a day. Everything was staffed well. We had no issues all day and we are through at 9 p.m. That is pretty good for a county this size,” he said.

The total numbers released by the Election Commission on their website are unofficial results. Warren said that it will take about two weeks for official results to be released. “We have to go through and reconcile every precinct.”
