A trio of football standouts who helped lead Mt. Juliet High to a three-year record of 34-6 signed with Lebanon's Cumberland University in ceremonies Friday morning.

Halfback Caleb Hopkins (5-8, 170), outside linebacker Tre' Nealous (6-1, 175) and hard-hitting safety Cody Carr (5-8, 180) inked their paperwork in front of teammates, family and friends in the Mt. Juliet library.

"These guys have been part of a very special group here at Mt. Juliet," said golden Bear head coach Roger Perry. "This gives us five players from this class who have signed."

LEBANON -- Fifth-ranked Cumberland erased a 17-point first-half deficit and had chances in regulation to secure the win but dropped a 61-59 decision to 14th-ranked Shawnee State in the NAIA Game of the Week Thursday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Bulldogs (24-2, 15-2) lost for the first time since January 3, ending an 11-game winning streak, after starting the game horribly but righting the ship after intermission, only to fall just short in the end. Schera Simpson led the Bears (20-6, 11-5) with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Alex Pohl added 18 points, with many of the duo’s buckets right around the goal.

Devilettes hold off HHS 45-39 --
LEBANON -- As the going got tougher in the fourth quarter, Lebanon's Madison Sloan stepped up as the Devilettes held off a spunky Hendersonville squad 45-39 in a District 9AAA loser-out game Thursday at Campbell Brandon Gym.

Sloan led all scorers with 22 points, including a clutch 6-of-8 from the free throw line as No. 3 seeded Lebanon improved to 15-12 overall and moves on to the district semifinals against Beech 7 p.m. Saturday at Station Camp.

"The game was physical and that really plays into Madison's hands," said LHS coach Courtney McFarlin, "she's not afraid of contact and she's always looking to attack the basket."

Cumberland’s plans for “twi-night” baseball doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against Union University and Indiana University-Southeast have been scuttled due to concerns over near-freezing temperatures in Wilson County.

The revised schedule now has Union playing IU-SE Friday at 11 a.m. followed by CU vs. IU-SE at 2 p.m. Saturday’s schedule calls for Cumberland to host Union in an 11 a.m. twinbill.

“It’s just going to be too cold to play tonight or Saturday at Veterans Field,” said CU Coach Woody Hunt. “Indiana-Southeast will play Union and us on Friday, then they’ll be able to get back home. Union will get in three games if the weather holds and we’ll also get in three games.”

Cumberland (2-1-1) travel to Montgomery, Alabama for three games beginning Sunday as the Bulldogs take on Auburn Montgomery in a 5 p.m. contest, followed by a 3 p.m. single on Monday. On Tuesday, CU will play at Faulkner in a 12 Noon start.
