Sixth-run sixth ignites CU rally PDF Print E-mail

LEBANON -- Cumberland scored six two-out runs in the sixth inning with a solo homer from Richie Seaton and a two-run single by Daniel Harrison, as the 12th-ranked Bulldogs overcame a three-run deficit en route to a 9-7 victory over UVA-Wise in the first game of a weekend series at Stockton Field Friday afternoon.
 
Cumberland (31-13-1, 14-2 Mid-South) sent 11 batters to the plate in the six-run inning, which started with a two-out solo homer to rightcenter by Seaton.

Seven consecutive batters reached thereafter, with Cory Urquhart’s two-run single to right tying the contest at six. Craig Monson drove in a run with a single through the right side before Harrison’s two-run single to right gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage.

Three Walter J. Baird Middle School wrestlers have been chosen to participate on the Team Tennessee National Wrestling team.

Preston Parks (152 lbs.), Ryan Brown (115 lbs.) and Austin Plumlee (105 lbs.) are in Des Moines, Iowa through April 13 to participate in the Lee Pamulak Middle School National Duals.

They will be teaming up with other middle school wrestlers from across the state to represent Tennessee against 42 other teams from across the country.

Fresh from a 10-5 home win over Red Boiling Springs Wednesday, Watertown will be in Gainesboro tonight for the annual Alex Cassetty Invitational. The Purple Tigers will take on host Jackson County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Two games are on tap for Saturday -- a 12 Noon contest vs. Smith County followed by a 2 p.m. game with McMinn Central.

WCHS & FCS headed to Franklin
A couple of Wilson County teams will be participating in the annual Franklin / Sonic Showcase softball tournament this weekend at Fly Park in Williamson County.

Class AAA Wilson Central and Class A Friendship Christian will each play two games Friday evening before playing each other Saturday morning in the final pool game for each squad.

Watkins headed to CSCC PDF Print E-mail

Friendship Christian point guard Kristian Watkins signed a national letter of intent and scholarship papers Tuesday to continue her basketball career at Columbia State Community COllege.

Watkins, the daughter of Danny and Alma Watkins of Lebanon, played two seasons at FCS under coach Deanna Teeter.

"Columbia State is getting a fine young lady and a player who has only scratched the surface," Coach Teeter said. "Kristian will get a chance to grow as a player at Columbia State."
