‘Lockout’ president’s daughter used to be ‘Lost’
Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Dear Ken: Where have I seen the actress who played the kidnapped president’s daughter opposite Guy Pearce in “Lockout”?

That would be Maggie Grace, 28, a Worthington, Ohio, native, who co-starred in “Lost” as Shannon Rutherford and was Irina in “The Twilight Saga: Parts I and II.” Among her other films are “Taken,” “Knight and Day,” “The Jane Austen Book Club,” “The Fog” and “Malice in Wonderland.” Her TV movies include “Murder in Greenwich” and “Twelve Mile Road” and she was a guest on the TV shows “CSI: Miami,” “Cold Case,” “Oliver Beene” and Law & Order: SVU.” About her current flick, she says, “I like action movies, and like them to have a sort of self-conscious humor to them. And I really liked that our leading man has a sarcasm and wit about him, and he is kind of persnickety on the fly.”

Dear Ken: Who were the stars of a Western sitcom from the 1960s called “F Troop”?

The main characters were Capt. Wilton Parmenter (Ken Berry), Sgt. O’Rourke (Forrest Tucker), Corp. Agarn (Larry Storch) and Wrangler Jane (Melody Patterson). Other cast members of the 1965-67 series, set at Fort Courage, Kansas, were James Hampton, Joe Brooks, Bob Steele, Frank DeKova and Don Diamond. The lyrics to the theme song began like this: “The end of the Civil War was near, When quite accidentally, A hero who sneezed, abruptly seized, Retreat and reversed it to victory!” I guess you had to be there.

Dear Ken: When is the RC-Moon Pie Festival in Bell Buckle, Tenn.? When were Moon Pies invented?

That event goes down the hatch on June 16. The Moon Pie brand was created in 1917, and the trademark registered in 1919. Did you know that the Big Bill Lister song “Gimme an RC Cola and a Moon Pie” was a country radio hit in 1951? Neither did I. Big Bill was born Weldon E. Lister and earned the nickname “Radio's Tallest Singing Cowboy” since he stood 6-foot-7 in his bare feet.

Dear Ken: How old is Doris Day and how many movies did she make?

Day, 88, appears in 39 films and made 29 record albums. She lives in Carmel, Calif., and was active for years in animal welfare. The Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center in Murchison, Texas, was opened and named after her in 2011. Turner Classic Movies, Sony Masterworks and Warner Home Video recently teamed to release a four-movie DVD package and a double-CD set with 31 of Day’s songs. You know what she says?  Que sera, sera.
