LEBANON -- Cumberland University junior Antonio Manuel Marcelo was voted the Mid-South Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season after defeating a pair of ranked opponents in singles and helping the Bulldogs to a pair of victories.
The Cascais, Portugal, native posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, win over Graceland University’s ninth-ranked Birkir Gunnarson and won 6-3, 6-4, against Xavier University's 17th-ranked Kyle Montrel, his second victory this month over Montrel. Marcelo is ranked 16th nationally in singles and has a 5-2 mark this spring in dual matches.
Marcelo and freshman Diogo Soares, ranked 10th in the country in doubles, lost 8-4 to fifth-ranked Razo Torres and Gunnarson but came back with an 8-2 victory against 12th-ranked Nikita Soifer and Montrel. Marcelo is now 4-3 this spring in doubles and 3-2 with Soares.
Cumberland hosts St. Catharine College this Friday and then travels to the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday for Mid-South Conference matches this weekend.
