The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. near mile marker 231 of the interstate, west of Highway 109. All lanes of I-40 were closed at one point but were reopened several hours later. LifeFlight helicopter was summoned to the scene and landed on the interstate.
There was no information as to what may have caused the Camry to cross the median, but the Critical Incident Response Team of the Tennessee Department of Safety along with workers from the Tennessee Department of Transportation returned to the scene of the accident on Monday morning taking measurements and reconstructing the incident.
The work shut down one lane of the interstate in each direction for sometime on Monday where the accident occurred.
The report noted that everyone was wearing their seat belts, but that in the case of the three who were killed would not have made a difference.
There was no indication that the accident was alcohol or drug related. State Trooper Tracy White of the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
