Top taxpayers list sees little change in Wilson County

October marks a change in seasons, the World Series begins, and property tax notices are sent out.

Everyone enjoys the first two, but they dread the third.

Wilson County billed its residents and businesses nearly $73 million, which is $10 million more than last year and $20 million more than the year before. Wilson County Trustee Jim Major said his office usually collects 98 percent of the total due.

Middle Tennessee Electric received the highest bill again at $1,058,827. The Nashville Superspeedway came in second with $936,807.

MTEMC, an electric cooperative which distributes power to most of Wilson County, is taxed based on the assessed value of the entire infrastructure – buildings, substations, transformers, poles and lines. In addiction to the amount MTEMC will pay to the county, they will also pay taxes to the Cities of Lebanon and Watertown.

Jumping into third place on the top 20 taxpayers list is an investment group called DCT Eastgate LP, who took the Bridgestone/Firestone’s spot when they bought the buildings the tire company vacated. DCT Eastgate also houses CEVA Logistics and Zeledyne Carlite and one empty building.

Major said his office sends out three notices and allows taxpayers to send in their payments in up to four installments.

“I’m willing to work with people because I know times are hard,” Major said. “The payments are due at the end of February 2010, but any payments that are made after that will be penalized 1.5 percent per month that it is late.”
