Winfree-Bryant Middle School has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation as part of the Shape the State grant program.
The schools physical education teachers, led by Jeramy Ezell and Megan Braundmeier, said they hope the SPARK curriculum, training and needed materials that will be purchased with the grant funds will help instill in students a life dedicated to healthy living.
SPARK is a research-based, public-health organization dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that promote lifelong wellness.
Since 1980, childhood obesity rates in the U.S have more than tripled. In Tennessee, about 4 in 10 children are overweight or obese, according to state Department of Health data, a statistic officials are working to improve.
In an effort to alleviate this problem, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation is awarding up to 20 grants valued at $10,000 each to Tennessee middle schools as part of the Shape the State grant program.
