To the Editor: The Second Amendment is clear in affirming an individual's right to keep and bear arms.
I was disappointed to see several elected officials claim to support gun rights but simultaneously seek to abridge that right. The flaw in the argument of those who oppose allowing handgun carry permit holders to carry in parks is that a criminal by definition does not follow the law. The criminal knows with great certainty that preying upon people in parks means attacking unarmed law abiding citizens -- including those same children who many of our misguided elected officials claim to be so interested in protecting.
My thanks to the officials who publicly stated their support of the law in the article. For those others, please consider this issue with great care and thought. It is rare to see the Second Amendment as a local issue -- but today it is. At the next election it is my sincere hope that those who serve the public will proudly state they supported one of our most essential American liberties.
