Special school board meeting will address ‘weighted grades’

The Wilson County Board of Education will hold a special called work session and meeting Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 5 and 5:30 p.m., respectively, to address and possibly reverse policies that the group changed earlier this year.

Those policies include state-mandated changes to grading systems and weighted grades that put the district out of compliance with the Tennessee Department of Education, which could impact students’ HOPE scholarship eligibility, according to Wilson County Deputy Director of Academics Monty Wilson.

The board denied the state-mandated changes because they were partnered with district-driven changes, such as switching the district’s class rank system to Latin honors designation categories and exam exemption changes.

Board member Wayne McNeese said he believed the board would have approved the state-mandated changes if they were isolated from the district-driven changes.

District leaders will ask board members to waive first and second reading requirements of the policies so they take effect immediately if approved.

The meeting will take place at the Wilson County Schools Central Office at 415 Harding Dr. in Lebanon.
