A local bank’s IT department stepped up big time to help out local seniors in need, just in time for the holiday season.

Wilson Bank & Trust’s IT department decided its annual outreach this year would be SCAN (Senior Citizen’s Awareness Network). WB&T’s IT department administrative assistant Jessica Wrye said the bank as a whole started the community-wide outreach last year and this second annual event her department (which has 18 employees) decided its project would be SCAN.

“We discussed what would be best for us to do,” she said. “SCAN provides a need for seniors who don’t necessarily have support and it’s important they know members of the community are there to help out.”

The IT department focused on donating toiletry-type items, and cash. What surprised SCAN Director Debbie Pare was, along with the much-needed items, that some of the employees donated cash.

“And the bank as a whole matched those monetary funds!” she said. “How generous!”

Pare has headed SCAN, along with Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Don Witherspoon, for years.

“WB&Trust IT employees donated so much,” Pare said. “Very much needed items such as soap, lotions, tooth paste, body wash, laundry detergent and toilet paper.”

She said when Wrye delivered the items she also had a surprise of cash donations, matched, to add up to over $900.

“We can’t thank them enough,” she said. “That money will go a long way toward purchases and mostly travel.”

SCAN uses Kelly Cab and Mid Cumberland vouchers to transport seniors to doctors’ appointments and more. The money will also go toward things such as heaters and air conditioners.

“But, mostly for transportation and food,” Pare said.

There are 132 SCAN recipients in Wilson County.
