Local runners are encouraged to lace up their running shoes for a good cause on Saturday, Nov. 5, when the fourth annual Charis Challenge benefiting Charis Health Center clinics in Mt. Juliet and Gladeville, will be held at Charlie Daniels Park.

Charis provides primary health care to uninsured residents in the Wilson County area. Despite the Affordable Care Act, health care is still not affordable to many hard-working people in the community, according to event organizers. Charis serves these individuals and families in the coverage gap.

Charis Health Center operates similarly to a regular doctor’s office, but they’re staffed primarily by volunteers. Through support from the community, they are able to limit the cost to patients to $25 for an office visit.

The Charis Challenge offers 5K and one-mile distances and welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels, from amateurs to elite athletes. New this year, the Charis Challenge will offer a $10 registration discount for students. Organizers say pets are not allowed at the event.

On Nov. 5, live music will begin at 7 a.m. and chair massages will be provided by Active Life Chiropractic. The one-mile run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., and the fee for the one-mile event is $25 but will increase to $30 after Nov. 3. The 5K will begin at 8:40 a.m., and the registration fee is $35 or $40 after Nov. 3. Students under 18 years old or enrolled in college will save $10 on registration.
