Charles Monty Pope, 71

 

Memorial services will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 22 at Baird Chapel in Cumberland University's Memorial Hall for Mr. Pope, 71, of Lebanon. A former educator at the middle school, high school and college level, Mr. Pope passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at his home in Lebanon surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 19, 1943 in Old Hickory, he was the son of the late John Felton and Mary Jo Hayse Pope. Mr. Pope graduated from UT Knoxville, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees.

He taught at Antioch High School and was an original member of the faculty at Apollo Middle School, where he twice received Teacher of the Year.

He retired from Metro Nashville Public Schools after 27 years and taught young minds to love history (especially Andrew Jackson) at Lebanon's Cumberland University for 21 years.

At CU Mr. Pope was received recognition as the Most Outstanding Faculty Member and the Presidents Teacher Excellence Award. He was a long time member of the Andrew Jackson Foundation and of the Tennessee Historical Society. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Theta Prime Chapter and also served as chapter sponsor.

He was the Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society Faculty Sponsor and a dedicated supporter of Cumberland University wrestling.

His great loves were his family, his friends and teaching children and young adults. Monty's kindness, warmth, humor and wide breath of knowledge has touched many -- and will be remembered as his legacy.

Visitation with the family will be held 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Epiphany Episcopal Church, 1500 Hickory Ridge Rd., Lebanon The family will also receive friends 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 22 at Baird Chapel with a reception to follow.

Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Patricia Holman Pope; sons John (Traci Thorne) and Spencer (Kristi Carter); grandchildren Kennedy, Garret, Carter, Caroline and Tanner; sister Brenda Pope, and brother-in-law, Cliff (Jan) Holman.

Special thanks to the professional and caring people at Home Instead Senior Care, Gentiva Hospice, and to the doctors at St. Thomas West.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Monty's memory to Epiphany Episcopal Church or The Monty and Pace Pope Scholarship for History and International Students at Cumberland University.

Arrangements were in the care of Lebanon's Partlow Funeral Chapel.
