NEW COACHES at Wilson Central




 

 

Jeff Keller & Melissa Weiland — Wilson Central principal Travis Mayfield has been a busy man lately, but he’s hoping his efforts will return dividends with the hiring of new coaches for girls basketball and softball.

Former Alabama Huntsville head women’s coach Jeff Keller was introduced Thursday morning, May 25 as the new coach of the Lady Wildcats basketball team.

Former Alabama Huntsville head women’s coach Jeff Keller was introduced Thursday morning, May 25 as the new coach of the Lady Wildcats basketball team. Keller, a graduate of Lipscomb University, spent the last two season as the girls basketball coach at Enterprise (AL) High.

He takes over a program that went 88-12 in three years under John Wild, including two District 9-AAA champions, a Region 5-AAA crown

Tuesday afternoon, May 23 Mayfield announced the hiring of Melissa Weiland as the new head coach of the WCHS softball program.

Weiland, the head coach at Independence High in Williamson County the past three seasons, takes over for interim coach Sean Smith.

Smith led the Lady Wildcats to a record of 25-17-1 this past season.

Weiland, who was softball and basketball standout at Riverdale High, starred at Middle Tennessee State where she was All-Conference and Academic All-Conference.

While a student at Riverdale, she was named Daily News Journal Female Athlete of the Year in 2002.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity,” Wieland said. “I can’t wait to meet the team.”

Wieland and Mayfield worked together at Independence for a year before Mayfield returned to Wilson Central two years ago.

NEW ASSISTANT COACH — Leigh McCutchen was also introduced as Weiland’s pitching coach.McCutchen will join the WCHS faculty as a physical education teacher after a stint at Siegel Middle School in Rutherford County. She pitched on the college level at Southeastern Missouri and at Oklahoma Christian College.
