Central sputters on offense –

FRANKLIN — There’s a line from the old Pogo comic strip that reads, “We have met the enemy, and they are us.”

Locked in a tight contest at Battle Ground Academy’s Guffee-Brown Stadium, Wilson Central dropped a 12-8 decision Saturday while trying to fight through botched pass routes, missed blocking assignments, penalties, dropped passes and a general lack of rhythm on the offensive side of the ball.

“We had our chances to win the game,” Wilson Central coach Brad Dedman said. “It was something every series. A catch we couldn’t make, a block we didn’t finish that forced our quarterback to rush his throw.

“I thought we played really hard, but it seems like we were one play away nearly every series.

“If we can stay on a block a little longer, if our backs can hug a little tighter to the hole, we can have some success. We’re close, we’re just not there yet.”

Down 12-8, Central’s defense forced a punt and thanks to a fine punt return from Ezra Widelock, set up shop at the BGA 35 with 3:33 remaining in the contest needing a touchdown to take the lead.

QB Tristin Lewis fired an incomplete pass on first down, then connected with Zavier Ali on a check-down route for a loss of one – followed by a false start penalty.

Facing a third and 16, Lewis threw incomplete, then was sacked for a 10-yard loss on fourth down as the ball went over on downs with 2:27 left.

Linebacker Blake Hobbs and interior lineman Jesse Richardson helped lead a stellar defensive effort.

“Our defense played really well and kept us in the game,” Coach Dedman said. “We gave up two big plays and they scored all there points right there.

WCHS tailback Ali finished with 91 yards on 19 carries, but only logged five attempts for 21 yards in the second half after taking a hard hit on the knee in the third quarter.

Lewis finished 8-for-19 through the air for 91 yards and was sacked three times.
