Assigned to short season Burlington Royals -
BURLINGTON, NC -- The decision has been made.
2019 College World Series Champion AJ Franklin has signed a professional baseball contract with the Kansas City Royals.
A graduate of Wilson Central High, who spent the past four seasons as a member of the Vanderbilt baseball program, Franklin was a 17th-round selection in this year's MLB Draft.
"A new chapter," Franklin said via his Twitter account earlier this week. "Officially a Kansas City Royal! Forever grateful for my 4 years at Vanderbilt. Forever a VandyBoy."
He has been assigned to the "short season" Burlington Royals, the Appalachian League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
In his final season with the Commodores, Franklin made 13 relief appearances, striking out 16 batters over 13.2 innings.
He made one appearance on the road to Omaha, tossing an inning of relief against Duke in the final series of the Nashville Super Regional.
A redshirt junior, Franklin had one year of eligibility remaining in college.
He is the son of Jason and Lorie Franklin of Lebanon.
