Explosive plays power win for WHS -
WATERTOWN - Explosive plays on both sides of the ball helped spark Watertown High to a 38-20 victory over Class 4A DeKalb County Friday at Robinson Stadium.
"“We controlled the line of scrimmage very well, we ran the ball," said WHS head coach Gavin Webster.
"Brayden (Cousino) completed some big passes when we needed to and I just felt we controlled the line of scrimmage. That’s what won us the game.”
Nursing a 10-6 lead at intermission, sophomore tailback Adam Cooper raced 65 yards to stake the Purple Tigers to a 17-6 lead with 7:27 left in the third.
Later in the third, Cousino scored on a keeper from nine yards out to push the lead to 24-6.
A total of 28 points were scored in a wild fourth quarter -- including a 50-yard pick six by Kaden Seay and a 52-yard run touchdown sprint by Cooper with 5:39 remaining to ice the game. Along with his interception, Seay finished with 10 tackles.
Jaden Robertson was in on 15 tackles and KK West had 13 stops for the Purple Tigers while Ian Fryer registered four quarterback sacks. Lance Fripp had seven tackles, an interception and a quarterback sack.
The win moved the Purple Tigers to 2-2 on the season headed onto a Region 4, 2A game at Whites Creek Friday, Sept. 17.
DeKalb County (1-2) is scheduled to entertain the Cumberland County Jets in a Region 4, 4A contest.
