Bears rumble for 250 rushing yards –

MT. JULIET – Riding the strength of a strong ground game and a stout defensive effort, Mt. Juliet ran past Lebanon 45-24 Friday at the Mel Brown Athletic Complex.

The win was the 12th in a row for the Golden Bears in the cross-county rivalry and gave Mt. Juliet a 29-15 edge since the series was renewed back in 1977.

Utilizing big plays, Lebanon held brief leads at 3-0 and 10-7, but was forced to play catch-up for most of the night as the Bears piled up 415 yards in total offense (250 on the ground) and 25 first downs.

Dequantay Shannon blazed 94 yards with the opening kickoff, but LHS was forced to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Sean Redmon.

Following a Mt. Juliet score, the Blue Devils responded with a 73-yard flea-flicker than found quarterback Jalen Abston hurling a perfect strike to Kemontez Logue for a TD and a 10-7 LHS lead with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter.

Lebanon defenders stymied Mt. Juliet three times in the first half as Will Seats, Anthony Crowell and Christian Borden all picked off Stephen Swoner passes.

Leading 28-17 at intermission, Mt. Juliet offensive coordinator Zac White was content to grind out the clock with an effective ground game.

Tailbacks Conlon Baggott and Camron Malone swapped carries in the second half as the Bears attempted just two second half passes.

Baggott finished with 164 yards on 29 carries and scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run late in the game.

Malone scored on a 15-yard run in the waning seconds of the first quarter and chipped in with 48 yards on 12 attempts.

If Baggott and Malone were Mt. Juliet’s thunder, speedy senior Jamari Sowell was the lightning.

Sowell scored twice in the first quarter on a 30-yard pass reception and a 5-yard run. All told, he accounted for 97 yards from scrimmage on just six touches, 76 yards on three receptions and 21 yards on three carries.

Mt. Juliet held Lebanon to 175 yards in total offense and just six first downs. Counting 28 yards in quarterback sacks, the Blue Devils were limited to minus-four yards rushing on 26 attempts.

Shannon scored a pair of touchdowns in the loss, but was limited to 24 yards on 14 attempts.

“I thought we played hard, but we didn’t play good football,” said LHS coach Chuck Gentry.

“We’ve been beaten by two good football teams (Gallatin and Mt. Juliet). It’s how we respond that’s important. We’ll go to work on Monday and it’s my job to get our guys to respond.”

“It was a hard-fought win against a good team,” MJHS coach Trey Perry said. “It’s always a good win against a rival and I’m especially proud of our defense tonight.”

Lebanon is scheduled to host La Vergne Friday, Sept. 11 while Mt. Juliet will play at Gallatin.
