FRANKLIN - Watertown High's unprecedented success on the baseball diamond in 2022 reaped more accolades Saturday at the annual convention / clinic of the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association held at the Cool Springs Marriott.
Alec Whitlock, a senior on the Purple Tigers, was named Class 2A Player of the Year while Watertown coach Mark Purvis was voted Coach of the Year in Class 2A.
WHS defeated Pigeon Forge in the Class 2A championship game by a score of 10-3, capping a 29-9 season.
A two-way player (pitcher and catcher), Whitlock hit .375 with 4 home runs and 5 doubles while driving in 34 runs.
On the mound, Whitlock went 9-1 with an ERA of 1.14 over 61.1 innings of work. He struck out 93 opposing batters, walked 22, allowed just 39 hits and gave up only 10 earned runs.
Whitlock is presently a freshman member of the Jackson State Community College baseball program.
The 2022 Purple Tigers got off to a start of 11-8, then closed on an 18-1 run -- earning both the District 6-2A regular season and tournament crowns, the Region 3-2A tournament championship and a TSSAA Sectional along the way.
Purvis, in his second season at Watertown, had spent the previous 18 years at Mt. Juliet High where he guiding the Golden Bears to eight sectional trips, six state tournaments and sent over 100 players to the college ranks.
"I'm humbled by this award, especially the recognition from my peers in the coaching profession," Purvis said.
"You have to understand, awards like this are special, but they're impossible without the players, the coaching staff, our administration at Watertown High and the support of our community."
