Vanderbilt's A.J. Franklin

2015 Wilson Central graduate

It's good to have options.

Vanderbilt University lefty A.J. Franklin, a 2015 graduate of Wilson Central High was drafted Wednesday by the Kansas City Royals in the 17th round of the Major League amateur draft (499th overall).

A redshirt junior, Franklin and his Commodore teammates are busy preparing for Friday night's opening game of the NCAA Super Regional against Duke at Hawkins Field. The winner of the best-of-three series advances to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Having already graduated from Vanderbilt, Franklin can opt to sign with the Royals, decide to transfer and use his final year to pitch at another school, or perhaps return to VU as a redshirt senior.

He's made 13 appearances this season, striking out 16 in 13.2 innings of work out of the bullpen.

Franklin, the son of Jason and Lorie Franklin of Lebanon, was the District 9-AAA Left-Handed Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore and a senior for Coach Anthony Ford at Wilson Central.
